Life Skills Programs
The learning of life skills is an important aspect in all of Step Out’s programming, as the organisation looks to encourage its service users to complete tasks independently.
Step Out
offers both individual and group activities, striving to give one-on-one
service whenever possible. The programs which are followed are custom-made to
meet the needs and desires of the service users.
With support
from Step Out staff, service users access the community to complete their
necessary errands, as well as to visit with friends and family. Independent
living abilities are encouraged in the completion of personal business such as
banking, doctor appointments, shopping, etc., whilst service users might also
enjoy a drink, meal or even just a stroll down the main street to chat with
their co-citizens.
There is also
a numeracy and literature component of the programming, where skills such as money-handling
and typing are developed. Normalisation and social inclusion are important
aspects of this program, and a major focus is that everyone has an engaging and
fun time.
Within our
Life Skills Programme is the standalone initiative of the Step Out Nursery.
This project took root through the hard work and ingenuity of Step Out service
users. The nursery grows and sells a variety of plants to the greater community.
This is a wonderful learning experience vis-à-vis time and money management, as
well as encouraging employability skills. Seeing something progress from seed
to full-grown plant embodies the efforts of the nursery workers and is of
therapeutic benefit. The nursery also provides a positive environment for the
Step Out staff and other service users. It is a beautiful place where members
of the greater community can learn to appreciate the abilities of persons with
disabilities.
