History of Step Out
Step Out Community Access Service Incorporated was set up in July 1991, following a study looking into the needs of people with disabilities in the Katherine Township.
The service was jointly funded by the Commonwealth of Australia Government (Department of Health, Housing and Community Services– DHH&CS) and the Northern Territory Government (Department of Health and Community Services– DH&CS). The Australian Red Cross Society became the sponsor body, responsible for the administration of financial matters.
In September1991, a Steering Committee was formed, responsible for policy and financial matters. The members of the Steering Committee, who had varied interests in the service provided, met on a monthly basis. Step Out became an incorporated association in November1993. The Steering Committee evolved into a Committee of Management and took full control of the service in June1994.
Step Out is registered as a charity with the Commonwealth of Australia Government. Its principle source of funding is through an Agreement with the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Health. It has also received grants from charitable bodies and the local town council in order to enhance its various programs.
