Respite and Supported Accommodation
The Step Out Respite House offers a short-term break for families and
other voluntary care-givers, and a positive experience for those they care for.
Step Out’s
respite house currently has two full-time residents, with other service users
staying there in two week blocks. It provides a homelike environment for people
with disabilities year-round. Services are available for both urban and remote
communities.
Many of the
resite service users are high-needs, requiring around-the-clock care. They are
encouraged to participate in completing daily living tasks, such as cooking and
washing up. Healthy and diverse meals are home-cooked with the support of
staff. Various outings and activities are arranged according to service users’
needs and desires. In the past, this has included events such as the V8
Supercars, AFL football at Marrara and a performance by the Djuki Mala (Chooky
Dancers). The small, home-like environment provides an atmosphere where service
users are known to thrive.
The respite
service provided by Step Out is crucial in maintaining a healthy relationship
between people with disabilities and their primary caregivers. Step Out
provides an opportunity for these carers to refresh and relax, knowing that
their dependants are in safe, competent and helpful hands.
