September 2010

2010 National Carnival

As most of you should know by now, South Australia is holding the 2010 Australian Championships Orienteering Carnival in the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills between Saturday 25 September and Sunday 3 October. In following with previous traditions for Easter and Nationals carnivals held in South Australia, TT will be in charge of the registration bag preparation process prior to the carnival and the registration process for individuals and families during the carnival.

You may have noticed the Carnival Programme lists a number of Tintookies in key positions for various events.

Bob Smith as Course Planner and Phil Hazell as Controller are involved with the Australian Middle Distance Championships, which is also a National Orienteering League Event.

Ken Thompson as Mapper, Kay Haarsma as Course Planner and Mike Hicks as Organiser are responsible for the Australian Schools Individual Championships and the associated Public Individual Race.

Fi Pahor is organising the Australian Schools Relay Championships and the associated Public Teams Race, as well as facilitating the Night Event.

Ken Thompson has updated the map for the Australian Sprint Distance Championships which are also a National Orienteering Event League and an IOF World Ranking Event.

Jeffa Lyon is organising the Australian Long Distance Championships, another National Orienteering Event League and an IOF World Ranking Event.

Gil Hollamby as the Course Planner, John Lyon as the Controller and Barry Wheeler as the Organiser are arranging the Australian Relay Championships, which is also a National Orienteering League Event.

However, many helpers are needed that week.

The Carnival is arranged so that each event is the responsibility of the organising group.

As Organisers, the following would love to hear that you can help at their event.

Mike Hicks 8277 9795

Fi Pahor 8232 0652

Jeffa Lyon 8389 3143

Barry Wheeler 8263 4747

There are also some tasks which span the entire week. One of these is Registration. Erica Diment will need to roster helpers so that all can also have a run. Please phone her with times when you are available on 8379 2914.

Peter Young is coordinating Tintookies’ effort in the all-important task of moving the portaloos from one event to another. If you have a vehicle with a towbar, please contact him on 8362 0092.

REGISTRATION BAG STUFFING SAT SEP 18th

This important and traditional event will take place on Saturday 18 September from 3pm at the Hazells’, 23 Flora Street, Stepney.

It involves putting items into the individualised Carnival Registration bags under the guidance of Erica Diment. We have found over the years that ‘many hands make light work’, and the celebration afterwards is very enjoyable. This year we will be sending out for pizza! Please bring your own drinks.

 Social news

On a cold and wet Sunday afternoon after the Fox Creek event 18 July a few TTs ventured to the Lyons for afternoon tea with Egil and Rina Husby and their four children. They were in TT from Norway in 2003 (before children!) and had been living in Singapore since. They’ve now relocated back home to Norway, but took the opportunity to visit Adelaide with their children before flying home to Norway. It was lovely to see them again, and meet their very cute, tri-lingual children, English, Norwegian and Mandarin!

It’s almost the time of year to start planning the TT AGM in November. Details to follow.

Our condolences to George Reeves on the loss of his daughter after a long illness.

 Club Relays
The results are still unknown. However Tyson assures me all will be revealed at the OASA Awards and Presentation Night on 19 November.
