Located on Highway One between Port Wakefield and Port Pirie, Snowtown is 146km from Adelaide and home to a population of some 430 people. Snowtown has served the surrounding agricultural district and has established itself as a self reliant small service centre incorporating:

Snowtown, as a consequence of media attention in the past, has seen an increase in the awareness of the town and as a result increased visitation. Many visitors using the town as a stopping point have come to realize that the town is located in an area of natural beauty and rich heritage. A friendly town in a rural setting, Snowtown is well positioned as a driver reviver stop, being located approximately two hours from Adelaide.

Whilst the future economic success of Snowtown is closely linked to the agriculture industry there clearly are new opportunities emerging in the tourist trade and traveling public sectors.

Town's History

Centered around a railway line, Snowtown is a small town located in the Mid North of South Australia. The Snowtown was traditionally located on the land of the Karuma people which are best known as Indigenous people. The rapid development of the farming industry in the north of the area, has attracted the first arrival of the pioneers was in the 1867 to the 1869. During this period one of the main structures the famous Snowtown hotel was built.

In the year 1869 the government took a lot of interest in the Snowtown area. That year the government had planned to divide the Snowtown area into smaller holdings.

On December 17 1878, governor Sir William Jervois had named the town after the Snow family. The Snow family were Sir Jervoise`s cousins who lived on the Yorke Peninsula which is located west and southwest of Snowtown.

A rapid settlement had continued trough the years, servicing the farming community with the opening of 3 new General Stores, Saddlery,Boot-maker, Blacksmith and Machinist, Flour Mills, Butcher, Hotel,Bakery, Bank, School, Brickworks, also an increasing number of other businesses had also opened, Community amenities such as the Institute.
