Settled by Soldiers
The success of farming and the town’s settlement owes much to the hard work of those used to winning against the odds. The Department of Lands in 1945 were given 250,000 acres of Crown Land for development into ‘Soldier Settler blocks’. Before setting up their allocated farms, the former World War 11 soldiers had to work for the government department and the first farming families arrived in March 1948. Living conditions were primitive – with huts from the Loveday Internment Camp providing the families’ fist homes. Yet 174 ex- servicemen took up the offer and the first Parndana settlers moved onto their allocated farms in 1952. Today you can learn of their stories and success as you tour the town. Visit the Soldier Settlement Museum at the R.S.L. Hall.
