[edit] Who We Are
Grandparents for Grandchildren SA Inc is a not for profit community service organisation staffed by volunteers that provides a range of services to grandparents who are concerned about the welfare of their grandchildren who may be disadvantaged or in crisis. GFG works to support grandparents by providing material and emotional support and referral services.
As grandparents are confronted with a wide range of diverse issues that are always stressful, usually emotional, can challenge their limited resources and which culminate to bring unwanted pressures that may impede their efforts to provide a safe, emotionally stable, healthy and loving home-life for their grandchildren.
A key role that grandparents play, which cannot be understated, is the fact that many of their grandchildren would, in other circumstances, be in some form of Care facility or arrangement if it was not for the role of their Grandparents. This then means that many children who would otherwise be living in foster care, caravan parks, motels/hotels, cared for by nanny groups or social workers have the opportunity to live in a safe, secure and loving homes with their grandparents.
To ensure this preferred outcome GFG has developed a broad network of resources within South Australia that are able to assist grandparents through the maze of service pathways that best meet their individual needs in order to deliver positive and healthy outcomes for grandparents and also their grandchildren.
[edit] Our Purpose
- To provide assistance and a range of services for grandparents concerned about the welfare of their grandchildren
- To help and inform grandparents who care for their grandchildren full time
- To communicate and liaise with Federal, State and Local Governments, community and business organisations and agencies who have an interest in the welfare of children who are at risk of, or subject to, abuse within the family
- To develop public awareness, promote community involvement and support for families in crisis
- To promote, facilitate and impart knowledge into research relating to child abuse
Grandparenting Tip
Talk to your grandchild about their family history - your own and other family members. Stories about different family members help to give children a sense of belonging and help them to know where they fit in the broader community
