Our Island parish lies across Backstairs Passage at the foot of
the Fleurieu Peninsular in South Australia. It is well serviced
by car and passenger-ferry, and by light-aircraft.
The Island enjoys one of the highest levels of rainfall in this
driest state on the driest continent. It is well able to sustain
sheep-farming for wool, and the production of a great diversity
of foods. Islanders are as famous for their dairy, meat and fish
produce as they are for their eucalyptus oil, fine wines, and virgin
olive oil.
However, Islanders are perhaps best known for their hospitality.
Kangaroo Island is a destination for visitors from all over the
world. Visitors come to wonder at its pristine beauty and to see
the teeming wildlife, which inhabits the land and surrounding waters.
As the people of this Parish, we are always delighted when visitors
join us to worship the God of boundless life and love, the Three
in One. We have been doing so since the beginning of official settlement
on the Island, when the Anglican presence was first recorded on
29th July, 1836:
'.. the Church of England prayers were read in the
morning.'
Our Parish now consists of three churches: St. Alban's, Kingscote;
St. Columba's, Penneshaw; and St. Richard of Chichester, Parndana.
In our services, we seek to combine catholicity in sacrament with
the liberation of the word. We are liberal in thought, catholic
in practice, and warm of heart.
We hope to have the pleasure of your company to worship with us,
when you visit our wonderful Island home.
