History
The roots of this choir were laid in 1968 when the community was beginning to expand and under the baton of Mr. Don Jolly, the choir, then known as "The Southern Singers" came into prominence.
In 1971 the group took part in the Festival of Choirs for the first time and continued performing until 1975 when it was reformed under the name "The Southern Choral Group.
In 1976, when Noarlunga was granted its City status, the choir became known as "The Noarlunga City Choir". It has continued performing since then under various conductors, including the well renowed Timothy Sexton.
The organisation changed its name to the Onkaparinga City Choral Society Inc in 2003 and began to explore other activities that members could participate in. This resulted in the establishment of the OCCS Theatre Group which was later disbanded.
We were very successful in presenting the Christmas Opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" for four performances throughout Adelaide. In 2004 the group presented "Come into the Parlour" and Amahl was performed again at Christmas time. 2005 saw the production of "60 Years On" and in 2006 "That's My Music". We successfully staged the "Victorian Music Hall" in 2007 and recorded our own CD of Victorian sing-along songs.
With the appointment of a new Music Director in 2008 the choir began to explore other types of music and different styles of singing.
In 2009 the choir started using its original name "The Southern Singers" as its stage name to make our main activity clearer to the public.
