South Augusta was formed in 1912 and is the oldest existing club in Port Augusta. South Augusta Clubrooms are located in the Central Oval Complex .

Counter Teas and a Membership draw are available every Friday as well as after club games throughout the season.

 

At $20 the club boasts the cheapest 3 course meal in the town plus a la carte menu is also available.


The club gives every support to its juniors and 17 of the 22 players in the 2019 A Grade grand final team played colts for the club. 


The club prides itself in its coaching staff from Under 9's upwards and has had an excellent success record within its juniors.

SOCIAL SCENE


The Social Committee do a great job of organising events during the year.



A DJ will at the club from time to time after every club game and a Red and White ball is held through the year .


Other functions held through the year include a South Golf day Ladies Night and Club Family Day for all members .

The South Augusta Football Club is the oldest continuously operating club in Port Augusta and has over 400 members with 9 teams participating in the Spencer Gulf league ranging from Under 9's to A grade.

 

The club prides itself in its coaching staff from Under 9's upwards and has had an excellent success record within its juniors.


 The club is a non for profit organisation and is known as a family club with a "no pokies" machine policy.


   

The South Augusta Football Club was formed in 1912 and we played our first game ever against Central Augusta on the 24th May 1912 and lost that match 3.11 to 3.9.

 

In 1918 South Augusta won their first premiership after defeating Flinders 4.11 to 3.7.

 

From 1912 to 1961 the competition largely comprised of 3 teams South, Central and West with the addition of Quorn and Willsden at different periods of time.

 

The Spencer Gulf League was formed in 1961, comprising of teams from Port Augusta, Whyalla and Port Pirie. Whyalla left the SGL in 1965 leaving 8 teams from Port Augusta and Port Pirie. The league reverted to 7 teams in 1992 when Props and Risdon amalgamated to form Lions and 6 teams when Quorn Wolves disbanded..

 

The old clubrooms were opened in 1960 and we adopted the mascot of the Bulldogs in 1959.

In 2015 we moved to the new Central Oval Complex and the club is part of the facility that boasts netball, football and basketball courts. 

 

 

Premierships

 

South Augusta has won 17 A grade premierships since 1912 and those were in :

 

1918, 1928, 1938,1939,1942,1964,1981,1983,1993,1994, 2000, 2006, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

 

The South Augusta A grade side has been in 26 other grand finals since 1912 which they have lost, therefore they have been in 43 grand finals in 108 years which is 40% of those years playing in the last game of the year.

 

Since the SGL was formed in 1961 South Augusta in 1961 has won 12 premierships and also lost 10 other grand finals, making a Grand final on average every 3 years in the SGL.

 

In the 10 losing SGL Grand Finals South have lost to Port 3 times ,West 2 times, Central 3 times, Wolves 1 and Sollies 1.

 

Since 1961 and the start of SGL South Augusta have finished in the finals rounds 41 times in 59 years nearly 70% success rate and in the last 20 years we have finished in the top 3 teams 17 times.

 

South have also won 26 B grade Premierships since 1912, the last being in 2018.

 

Known as Souths best ever Premiership in a 12 team competition, the 1964 team was coached by Trevor Searle, grandfather of Ryan Struck. They defeated Port -Scores: South 11-17 to Port 11-15.

 

There have been over 200 players who have played in A grade premierships for the club

Several players have played in 4 A Grade Premierships including Gary Kernahan, Greg Shirley, Craig Shirley, Matt Downey, Vinny Urbanic, Darcy Kildea, Kahran McKenzie, Jake Collins, Aziel Stuart and Caleb Ritter. 


Other players who have played in 3 Premierships include Jarrod Waterworth, Anthony Anno, Chris Heritage, Kevin Harris, Eugene Barry, Harry Burton, Rex McRae, Harry Nicholson, Doug Rozee, Harry Holland, Daniel Dohnt, Sam Maule, Marcus Kerin, Billy Jo Russell, Tom Hamilton.  

 

Out of the players who played in either the 1993,1994, 2000, 2006 and 2012 Premiership sides 75% of those had played juniors at South. The 2017 and 2018 side had 14 players who had played Colts for Souths or their fathers had played for the club. The 2019 Team had 17 players who had played juniors.

 

 

Individual Honours

 

From 1938- 1942 a Magarey Medallist, Jeff Pash played for Souths was part of 2 Premierships. Ron Curyer won the Mail Medal in 1938 and 1939 and was part of the Premiership sides in those years.


 


A Grade Madigan Medallists for Souths include Bill Virgo, 1967, 1969, Pat Hynes 1980, Craig Cock, 1981, Shaun McLennan 1993, Keiron Keeler 2001 and Ryan Struck 2010, Lee Schmidt 2012, Darcy Kildea 2017, 2019, Aziel Stuart 2018.


 
South Augusta players who have been the SGL leading goalkickers in the competition include Brendan Colson, Bradley Amos, Mick Vanvacas, David Shillabeer, Lionel Brown .


Kevin Harris has won the club Fairest and Best a record 5 times at the club.


Outstanding players for the club who have been nominated for the Port Augusta Anniversary Team include David Williams, Barry Stephenson, Rod Lamshed, Bill Virgo, Ray Hanrahan, Pat Hynes, Anthony Anno, Robert Rozee, Kevin Harris, Robert Farr.

Officials and players who made the Port Augusta Hall of Fame  include Pat Hynes, David Williams, Bill Virgo, Rod Lamshed ,Barry Stephenson, Jeff Shillabeer, Jarrod Waterworth, Norm Brealey, Mark Shirley and Brian Shillabeer, Harry Waterworth, Val Waterworth, Leo Nowak, Sid Williams, Harold Bowman, Les Kittel, Norm Brealey, Jeff Shillabeer, Robert Bowman, Ray Hanrahan, Bruce Curtis , Kym Maule, Shane Kennedy, Anthony Anno.


Playing at the Highest level

 

There are 11 known players who have played Senior South Augusta Colts and progressed to play with a SANFL side at League level and they are Darren Shillabeer ( North Adelaide) David Shillabeer (Norwood), Michael Fuller (Woodville), Michael Corey (Woodville), Robert Rozee (South Adelaide) Grant Fuller (South Adelaide) , Jared Rivers (North Adelaide) Josh Coulter( Centrals and North), Ron Curyer ( South Adelaide), Connor Rozee ( North Adelaide) and Harry Kernahan (Glenelg/ State)


 


South Augusta Colts who have played AFL/VFL include Bryan Bienke ( Adelaide Crows) Jared Rivers (Melbourne), Connor Rozee ( Port Power) and other drafted players include Luke Taylor (Melbourne) and Josh Coulter (Crows)


 


Officials

 


South has had 55 A grade coaches since 1912 with Pat Hynes coaching 7 years and Gary Kernahan coaching the most with 8 years.


 


South have had 36 Presidents in 107 years, Dave Barry was President for 15 years, a club record and Bruce Curtis was President for 9 years. The club has only had 1 female President with Suzanne McKell in 2006/2007.


 


Games Played

 

A total of 1,600 players have been either A Grade or B Grade for the club since 1912.

 

160 players have played over 100 senior games for the club 

(A/B grade)


 


Only 23 players have played over 200 Senior games for the club


 


Only 11 players who have played over 200 league games for the club, the record holder being Gary Kernahan with 338 senior games.


 

Only 8 players who have played over 300 senior games for the club in both A Grade and B Grade level with Gary Kernahan also holding that record.
