Brinkworth Museum and Historical Reserve
The Museum and Historical Reserve, formally the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, was officially handed over to the community in a special service during the State Jubilee 150 celebrations on 2.11.1986. The museum and reserve is to be preserved, and is managed by, the Brinkworth History Group, a member of the History Trust of South Australia (http://www.history.sa.gov.au/history/about_us.htm)
The Collection and State Jubilee 150
The collecting and collating of photographs and material to preserve the history of Brinkworth and surrounding districts began when the Historical Society was formed on 30th April 1984. This lead to the development of a display of photographs and items of historical significance, for the Jubilee 150 Celebrations in 1986 and the official handing over to the community of the former catholic church building, grounds and original contents. Major restoration and painting of the building was undertaken for this event with the help of a local government grant and many hours of dedicated work by volunteers.
Australian Bicentennial Project
Restoration continued with major work being done to the leadlight windows through a bicentennial grant for the Bicentennial Celebrations, held in Brinkworth in October 1988. The leadlight windows were designed and made by E.F. Troy, leadlight artist.

Brinkworth Centenary and Book Launch
As part of the centenary celebrations for Brinkworth the Historical Society compiled and published “Magpie Creek Junction: a history of Brinkworth and District” celebrating the centenary of Brinkworth in 1992. Copies are available via the History Group and at Hardy's Deli and Takeaway, Brinkworth.
Brinkworth History Group
The Brinkworth History Group was formed to maintain and continue to collect, collate and manage the Brinkworth Museum Collection and the surrounding grounds. Funds raised by the group with support from the Wakefield Regional Council continue to maintain the building. South Australian Federation Grant funding was received in 2000 to establish the ‘Local Flora – Living Herbarium’ project to highlight and preserve the unique area of ‘senna shrubland’ vegetation in the town of Brinkworth. Grant funding through the History Trust of S.A. and group funds enable the group to continue to manage and promote the ongoing historical collection for the benefit of the community. The History Group is currently undergoing the first stage of the Brinkworth Museum Redevelopment Plan with the installation of the “Religion in Regional South Australia” display.
Renovations and displays
The inside of the building has recently undergone major renovations, enabling the continuation of the “Religion in Regional South Australia” permanent display and the wedding display “Beaus and Belles of Brinkworth”
Dec 2006 Report and Grant Funding Received
After a rather hectic year for members of the History Group we are thrilled to receive our certificate for Registration with History Trust of South Australia, and to top it off, receive funding for future projects.
The Brinkworth History Group has recently been notified that funding has been allocated to three of the four grants that were applied for this year. The group are delighted that this funding will now enable the continuation of stage 2 of the project ‘Religion in Regional South Australia’, to copy for display purposes the photographic collection ‘Beaus and Belles of Brinkworth and District’ (this will enable the original photographs to be stored safely), and to purchase some necessary items like fans, heaters, a vacuum cleaner and a step ladder for the museum.Funds from the History Group are also built into these projects as well as put aside for the maintenance of the museum building and management of the collection.
Grants applied for in 2006.
- History Trust’s Museums Accreditation and Grants Program 2006-07 project titled ‘ Religion in Regional South Australia – Stage 2’ : $5,500
