Restarting Courses for Term 4
A journey through time in ancient Egypt
This course is for anyone who has even the slightest interest in ancient Egypt. It is of 20 weeks (two terms) duration and is presented twice yearly.
With the viewing of at least one DVD or video each week class members are initially introduced to the daily life of the ancient Egyptians from the peasants to the Pharaoh, the structure of their society, and their music, art, medicine and recreation. We also learn about a number of the earliest visitors to Egypt and the pioneering explorers and the most current archaeologists in that land.
Following this we look at the pyramids and tombs they built, the Great Sphinx, the Valley of the Kings, and their huge temples, particularly the one at Karnak and the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir EI-Bahri.
This is followed by 7 weeks of delving into the lives and mysteries surrounding 33 of the greatest and most notable of Egypt's many pharaohs spanning a period in excess of 3,500 years.
We look next at their myths, gods, religion, mummification and burial practices and their belief in the afterlife. The ancient Egyptian language and writing follows as well as presentations on their medical practices and their belief in and study of astronomy.
During the course approximately 150 pages of hand-outs are distributed to each class member enabling them to have almost their own mini reference book on ancient Egypt by the time the course concludes.
