December 2007

Welcome to the Tintookies Newsletter. My name is Anna Hazell , your new Newsletter editor. Firstly, I’d like to thank Jeffa Lyon for all the years she’s produced our newsletter. Now it’s my turn!  I’ve been involved with the club for over 20 years with my husband, Phil and for the last 16 years with our two boys, Henry and Luke.

A newsletter is only as good as the contributions, so I’d urge you all to think of contributing some items that I can publish in the next edition. I’m anticipating that I will produce six editions a year, so please help me fill them with interesting articles.

The new Tintookies committee was voted in at our recent AGM held at the hidden treasure that is “Forester’s Forest” near Gepps Cross.  The club is looking at this for future mapping, although I did hear on the radio recently that SA Sports Park has earmarked this site for the new Super School. Hopefully they won’t touch this part of the area and we can all benefit from this beautiful site in years to come.

I’d like to wish all members and their families a Happy Christmas and a safe New Year.

CONGRATULATIONS RON LARSSON!

Congratulations to Ron Larsson for being this year’s recipient of the John Hall Award for services to orienteering.  Ron has given outstanding service to orienteering over a period of time dating back to the 1980’s. His expertise in batteries, radio communication (he developed the radio system used at WOC 1985) and timing systems has been invaluable. This is ongoing as he currently prepares batteries for the SI units – a time consuming task involving the packaging of 3 x AA batteries by soldering etc.

Ron has given outstanding service to orienteering over a long period dating back to at least 1980. When Robin & myself joined TT in 1980 Ron provided us with invaluable advice on the elements of good course setting and fairness in control placement. Our recollections are a bit lost but we do remember various guidelines prepared by Ron on these topics when orienteering was still in it's infancy.

His design and manufacture of control stands has withstood the test of time for about 21 years. Most recently Ron has made control stands that incorporate the SI holders, are lightweight and nestle together when packed up.

He has also been controller and course setter for many events over the years, including national events held in SA, such as the major controller for the Australian 3 Days in Broken Hill Easter 1997. He is also a meticulous map maker and has recently made street-park maps around Adelaide.

Gerhard Deuschle

Gerhard Deuschle, a TT member in the 1980’s died in November 2007. He is best remembered for his devotion to night orienteering. He and his mate, Jack Steers would stay out in their caravan whilst setting up their courses. Unfortunately their caravan caught fire one day, and with it went all of Tintookies stock of Ippinitchie and Crews Creek maps which were ALL stored in the caravan. These maps, along with Walnut Gate, made up the Easter 3 days 1983 maps, predating by many years the use of OCAD. In those days we couldn’t simply press a button to replace the burnt maps. We then decided to divide map stocks so the chances of losing entire map stocks was reduced. Now, the few remaining old maps in this category are “under Mike Hick’s bed” for safekeeping!

Kris Mosher

Kris Mosher was a member of TT from the late 1980’s until 2000. She was from the mid west of USA and was an Outdoor Ed teacher and very much involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. This led her to come out to orienteering to improve her navigational skills. She was on John Lyon’s staff at the Heights School and he and son Peter went with Kris on one of her expeditions to Mambray Creek. I also went on a canoe trip with Kris whilst I was still at school in 1978.

Kris brought along her neighbours’ daughters, Melissa and Vanessa Allen, and they too became TT members. Sadly Kris was diagnosed with breast cancer and finally moved back to USA to be with her family. She died in September 2007. Not only has TT lost a past member, but the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme misses her willingness to undertake those many expeditions. She was an inspiration to many young people here in SA for many years.

40 Tintookies members earned OA merit badges.

As in previous years, the Club will pay for badges for M/W16 and under.

Anyone else who wishes to buy their badge ($5 each) should contact Fi Pahor on 8232 0652 or fpahor@candonet.com.au by 21 December so she can order it.

Money generated by the badge scheme is used to support our elites to represent Australia at the World Orienteering championships.
