Competition Eligibility

People who are not members of a recognised orienteering club may pre-enter the Easter 3-Day competition, or Badge events in their appropriate age classes, but they will not be eligible for badge credits in the OFA Badge Scheme. However, only members of a recognised orienteering club may pre-enter the State and National Championships or be eligible to score points in the SA Orienteer of the Year competition.

National Badge Scheme

The National Badge Scheme was established by the OFA in 1975 to recognise the achievement of a consistent orienteering standard relative to other orienteers in one's age group, and to raise funds for Australian team representation in World Championships. Badges are awarded at three levels gold, silver and bronze. They are woven cloth badges in the design of the OFA emblem - jumping kangaroo on an 'O' flag - with the kangaroo appropriately coloured, and with the year and class in which the badge is earned, indelibly inked on the badge.

To earn a badge you must qualify at the required standard at three recognised events within a two year period. The events that are recognised are:

  • the Australian Championships and Australian (Easter) 3-days;
  • all State Championships
  • nominated Badge Events run by State Associations;
  • other special events approved by the OFA Council eg. APOC).

The standard for each level of badge is determined according to the times of the placegetters in each A class. If there are 12 or more starting competitors, the first 3 times are averaged to determine a base-time. For 6 to 11 starters the first 2 times are averaged, and for 5 or less starters the winner's time only. For A and Elite classes the cut-off time you must beat to earn a gold credit is 1.25 x base-time. For a silver credit it is 1.5 x base-time, while for bronze it is 2.0 x base-time. For A short, B and C classes, no gold credits are granted and in some cases no silver credits either. The base-time is determined from the kilometre rate of the base-time for the A class applied to the course length of the lower class. Recipients of badges (which must be claimed and paid for) are acknowledged periodically in the Australian Orienteer. The Tintookies Club periodically makes application for award of badges to its members. The Club pays for the badges, thereby making a contribution in support of our Australian team participation in the World Championships.

OASA Orienteer of the Year

These awards are based on performance in 8 specified Orienteer of the Year (OY) events during the year, including the 2 Badge events and the State Championship. Only the best 5 results in these 8 events are counted. The class winner at each event scores 1000 points, while other competitors in the class are awarded a score of 1000 X (Competitor's time/Winner's time). Competitors must enter their correct class or course, or a higher class or course, to be eligible to score points. If competitors choose to enter a higher class or course, they must compete in that class or course for the rest of the season to continue to score points. At OY events the correct courses for different classes are:

Course 4: W 16,18,40,45,50,55,60,65 M 16, 55, 60, 65

Course 5: W 20, 21, 35 M 18, 40, 45, 50

Course 6: M 20, 21, 35

Orienteer of the Year awards are traditionally presented by OASA at the end of each year.

Consistency badges

Twenty four consistency badges are awarded by OASA each year to both metropolitan and country members under 14 years old who have run at the most events regardless of how well they did. Consistency badges are also traditionally presented by OASA at the end of each year.

InterClub

First there was the Metro O League. Then there was the Isosport Cup. Now we have InterClub. This type of competition was introduced in 1995 to encourage greater participation and ‘club spirit’ among the five Adelaide metropolitan clubs at minor events. Participation is rewarded, as are excellent results in competition. Check the yearly Programme for designated InterClub events.
