Most orienteers have either taught themselves the skills of the sport or have received advice through informally talking to more experienced orienteers. However, there are a number of ways in which members can improve their orienteering performances more formally. Tintookies has a Coaching Coordinator who can advise you on the best way to go about getting some help. The Coaching Coordinator can put you in touch with another club member who will take an interest in your progress over a few weeks or months (the buddy system), or may recommend that you attend the OASA Coaching Day that is held once a year. The coaching day is aimed at orienteers who are fairly new to the sport or who have been orienteering for a while but who feel that they need to improve some of their basic skills. While, as mentioned above, much 'coaching' is done at a very informal level, several club members have obtained coaching qualifications at Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 so there is a considerable amount of expertise within Tintookies. Please feel free to ask someone in the club if you think you could benefit from some help. Each year, OASA holds a course for potential Level 1 coaches. Participation in this course and consequent involvement in low-key coaching is seen by some as a good way of improving their own skills. At the Association level, OASA has training groups for: Elites: Older Juniors and Open Age Group orienteers who may represent Australia at international events. Juniors: Secondary school age - likely to form the bulk of the SA Schools team. Sub-Juniors: Upper primary and lower secondary age.
