Boating on a Shoestring

This informal course covers both theory and practice and is aimed at anyone of whatever age (12- 80+) with an interest in canoing, rowing, sailing or motoring in small boats. Sessions are held on Thursdays 6 to 8 pm. at Salisbury East Neighbourhood House.

Since boats under 3.1 metres in length and powered by an engine of up to 5hp do not attract renewal of an annual registration fee and may be operated by permit-holders from 12 years old, this is our starting level.

Boating includes rules and regulations, safety, weather, and operating a boat. Sessions are adapted to fit participants' requirements and may enable them to take the written test for the Boat Operators Licence. Training for a Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency is also offered.

Boatbuilding starts with simple design methods leading to a cardboard one tenth scale model (a 2 metre boat from a 20cm or 8inch model). Patterns and templates can be made from the model to be transfered to materials to start building a boat.
