The School was established to teach the Zimbabwean languages (Shona and Ndebele) and culture to all in South Australia who are interested in one or both of the languages and culture. It teaches from beginners (those with little or no Knowledge of the language) to advanced (those who want to advance their knowledge of the languages and culture.) This is a not for profit, after hours school, open to all students, irrespective of their linguistic background. The School aims to sustain and develop Zimbabwean (Shona and Ndebele) culture in South Australia. This helps all to identify with both their home country and Australia and be proud to do so.
The Shona and Ndebele School opened its doors to students in March 2008. It is growing by the day. The School Principal is Jack Musekiwa Mafara, Mr Shepherd Mutusva is the Head of Department (H.O.D) for Shona and Ms Charmaine Zuze is the H.O.D for Ndebele. Lessons are held every Saturday at Cheltenham Community Hall, 62 Stroud North Av, from 10:30 am to 12:30 during the school term.
