Projects

The Wayfinders Project

The Wayfinders Project is a special program developed by the Port Broughton Sailing and Boat Club Inc. and funded through a grant from the Office of the Aging. The program is to enable seniors over 55, Women and Men, travellers, visitors and locals from all over the Mid-North Region of South Australia, to either experience the joy of sailing, learn to sail, or to once again go sailing. The program also has older type putt-putt motor vessels for fishing on your own or with some friends, or to just enjoy a boat ride with an experienced skipper or companion if required.
The Wayfinders are the revered, elder, Natural Earth Navigators especially those from the Pacific Islands, whose knowledge is both intrinsic and handed down by word of mouth generation to generation, who still voyage the World.
All that you have to do is bring some slip, slop, slap, warm clothing, a cut lunch, adventuresome spirit, and $5.00 and sail away.

We are also organising discounts at various businesses for participants in the project.

The program is to enable older persons to enjoy these activities without the worry or problems of owning a boat, without costs of registration of boats, trailers and cars or the problems of manoeuvring car and trailer or the hard work of reloading the vessel after a day's enjoyment.
The vessels are waiting alongside the dock for boarding and landing without having the worry of launching or putting away. The experienced AYF Qualified instructors and skippers oversee the project.

Fisherman's Friend Program

The Club also has the Port Broughton Fisherman's Friend - Mate program, which endeavours to find a young companion person to go fishing with the seniors, who would not normally go to the sea by themselves.

Working Maritime Museum

The Club is establishing a Working Maritime Museum with older volunteers passing on their knowledge to youngsters interested in traditional boat building skills, while preserving the maritime history of the Town. A more detailed description about these plans can be viewed here.
