BULLDOG BULLETIN APRIL 2009

BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE SOUTH AUGUSTA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

All the best to the senior players who will play their first match this week against West in a battle of the old rivals. It must be close to the first game as there were around 55-60 players at the Tuesday night training before the first game with a sausage sizzle doing the trick.

New players for this year include Jake and Daniel Collins who are sons of an old Southey Troy Collins and Grandson to club Elder Si Collins and Darren shillabeer will be playing the full year for the club after a stint at Norwood. Players lost this year include Mick Kellett, Jak Kerin, Adam Di Paulo, Phil Mitchell and Andrew Bienke and although its disappointing Ricky Johnson and Joe Fushtei want to leave to other clubs the Committee has stood firm and is refusing clearances.

Final appointments to the Coaches panel for year are as follows:

A grade: Anthony Anno, assistants Jamie Mctaggart, Robert Laube

B grade : Mark Austin, assistant Matthew McInnis

Under 18s coach: Ryan struck, assistant Robert Laube

Under 15s coaches: Michael Curley and Jason Di Paulo

Under 13s coach Craig Ritter

Under 11s coach: Andrew Reynolds

Under 9s coach still required if you are interested.

If you would like to be a Junior Colts sponsor this year either through weekly Awards or donations please email Craig Ritter on ritts65@bigpond.com.

If you would like to sponsor the senior players or give them a weekly award send Harry Waterworth an email on valaryw@iprimus.com.au and lets hope Val reads it for him.

If all goes to the plan their should be several important milestones this year amongst the senior playing ranks in 2009 including;

Damien Bolitho                    150 Senior games

Darryl Buzzacott                   200 senior games

Brett Jones                           150 senior games

Bradley Amos                       100 A grade games

Michael Curley                     100 Senior games

Adam Grantham                  100 Senior games and A Grade games

Matthew Grantham              100 Senior games and A Grade games

Chris Heron                          100 Senior games and A Grade games

Todd Kernahan                    100 Senior games and A Grade games

Christian Reid                      200 Senior games

Ladies committee events

Great to see Sue Trewartha and Wendy Black from the committee organising a Ladies committee after a recess of over 20 years. We all know the ladies do it better and they already have planned several events including a Quiz night on the 22nd May.

There could also be a Ladies Day at the Football on Sunday 28th June – South V West so it might be safe to skip that match. They have a tentative date for the Ball – 18th July so keep a look out in the local paper for confirmation.

The Committee is also organising Training Singlets for Senior & Junior players and they will  be taking orders over the next couple of weeks on a NO PAYMENT, NO ORDER basis. Sue is making up the order forms and people will be able to fill them in and give their orders to Adam Grantham, Sue or Denise behind the bar.

You can still sponsor a player in 2009?  For the cost of $100 you can sponsor a player, attend 2 free functions during the year as well as invites to other shows and know that your money is supporting the Football Operations of the club. Please see Kean Parrington if you want to sponsor a player and be a Vice President in 2009 and don’t forget the functions on the 16th May and 18th July 2009.

The Guernsey presentation night was an excellent night with over 100 people in attendance. The biggest cheer for the night was when Billy Baker and Chris Struck presented their number 7 Guernsey to Ryan struck and the elusive Frank Farr presented his Guernsey to Jake Collins who has big boots to fill.

Nick Heron still has some Under 18s Premiership shirts for sale and you can get a copy of the match by seeing Shirls who will get you a copy. Players who still need to pay $20 for the under 18s Guernseys should see Andrew Magarey.

Cricket

South Augusta Cricket club had their cricket presentation last Wednesday night with a good crowd attending. It was a mixed season for the team this year after the A grade finished third, B grade Fourth, Under 17s Premiers and the under 14’s Third.

Winners of the trophies for the under 14s were Sam Maule, Marcus Kerin, Jack Reid and Cricketer of the year Pat Miller.  Coach Kym Maule thanked helpers including Alastair Miller and Darren Jones for their sponsorship.

In the B grade trophy winners included Matthew McInnis for batting and Cletus Moroney for bowling and in the A grade Robert Rozee thanked the juniors who made an effort to support the club when required this year.  Robert made as many calls as Collinwood players to their lawyers last year but he did an excellent job of getting the team on the field.

In the A Grade Cricketer of the Year for the 5th time was Jarrod Waterworth who also won the Association medal and had an excellent year, other trophy winners were Aaron Vader for the highest wicket taker and Greg Shirley won the achievement award.

The Under 17s won their third premiership in a row and it was fitting end to the career coach Peter Trewartha who has an excellent record with 8 grand finals with 6 premierships during his coaching period at the club. Peter will retire from Colts Coaching this year after a long association with the club. Trophy winners in this grade were Marcus Gill, Robert Miller and Nathan Nistico, who also won man of the match in the grand final.  Marcus Gill won the Ted Shingles Memorial Cricketer of the year in the colts.

It seems Norby Doering has found his calling in life. Norby the ex 1980s runner and trainer for the club recently won the Far north Champions of Champions bowls tournament, beating teams across the region including William Creek and Parachilna. Norby teams up with other Southies Russel Grimes and Geoff Voight together with Westsider Joe O’Hanlon ( who wished he was a Southy).

The Youth project had a great conclusion with over 120 juniors attending the Community clinic on Wednesday 25th March with North Adelaide committing 2-3 players to assist on the day, with club supplying drinks and sausages to all the juniors who attend.  Many thanks to Michael Curley, Mark Austin and Pagey who have been great with their supervision and co-ordination of the project.

We have a new walking machine and exercise bike at the Club Community gym so if you want to get some exercise and trim up for the winter all you have to do is become a member for unlimited use, far cheaper than Gym membership at $20 for the year.

We also have weights and other exercise equipment for members use.

FLASHBACK 1979

A grade position: 8th

The B grade wins its second successive premiership after defeating Willsden in the grand final 10.9 to Willsden 7.13. Best player in the grand final are Mark Carn, Scott Whitaker, Greg McAtee, Robert Farr, Mark Shirley and Vivian Rigney.

President; Bruce Curtis, A grade coach: Pat Hynes, B grade Coach: David Shillabeer, A grade captain: Pat Hynes, B grade Captain: Bob Thomas, A grade Fairest and best: Peter Rivers, Under 18’s league medallist: Ashley Dunkley.  Souths “A grade” win the wooden spoon for the first time in the SGL and new players for the club this season include Laurie Benson, Noel Bury, Mark Carn, Jeff Evans, Michael Kerin, Shaun Phillis and Vivian Rigney,

Players lost from 1978 include: Mick Braham, Hayden Bretag, Gary Grantham, Neil Groves, Gary Hosking, C Kearns, Alan Maynard, Dean Mudge, Ian Pickford, Tony Richardson, Gary Schultz, B Sellers, David Shillabeer, Bronte Stuart, Victor Vanweezep, Kingsley Watchman, David Williams. The loss of many players hits the club hard with the opportunity to blood several younger players in the A grade.

B grade team manager; Jeff Shillabeer, B grade runner: Trevor Lamshed, Trainers: Gary Humphries, Trevor Haines, Alf Maule, Head trainer, Bill Applebee, Don Gourd, Lou Edwards

PS I reckon ex South treasurer Colin Scarlett played in that B Grade match for Willsden, not a good move Colin.
