Two of
the displays in this room are:-
A Sense of Difference - The settlement of the Hog Bay district 1830-1890
The isolation
of Kangaroo Island required special characteristics of the early
settlers who came here. While they experienced the same problems
as other remote communities in South Australia at that time, their
isolation was accentuated by their total dependence on sea transport
and communication. As a result the development of Kangaroo Island
has been different from that of other coastal settlements, and a strong
sense of Island identity - a sense of difference - still persists
today. In the same way the relative isolation of the Hog Bay district
from the rest of the Island and the different qualities of its
soils, resulted in its own unique growth as a rural community.
