Flora & Fauna Plants The vegetation in the National Park has been modified in the last century and a half. This has been brought about by wildfires, grazing of domestic stock and feral animals, the clearing of vegetation and by the invasion of weed species. The result is a sparse mosaic of remnant native vegetation communities. Various plant communities represented in the park range from low woodland on the upper ridges and slopes, river red gum associations along drainage lines and the main river channel, to open grassland and samphire, and low shrubland on the flood plains of the estuary. See the plants page for a comprehensive species list. Animals Koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, water rats and brushtail possums can all be found within the park. Both brown and black snakes are widespread, accompanied by many species of lizard. The estuary is an important breeding and feeding ground for birds. Present records show that 198 species inhabit the park. With birds being found from plains and backwaters to the highest cliffs, the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. See the birds page for a comprehensive species list.
