Veterans Working Together

The Northern Areas Veteran and Community Association Inc. is pleased to announce that we have been successful in acquiring a 'Veteran and Community Grant' from the Department of Veterans Affairs to begin the 'Veterans Working Together' project.

The association began early in 2002 when veterans, their families and friends who live in and around the Peterborough area pursued the idea of a 'shed style program', and what started with a few ideas and a few people, has now become a large group with a common cause and lots of ideas.

There are, at present, over 100 veterans of all conflicts residing within the area, with the majority being Younger Veterans, of whom the numbers are increasing each month. The number of veterans, therefore, is very large within such a small community and without access to services locally, those of us within the veteran community saw that those problems that are an inherent part of our lives becoming harder to keep a grip on.

The 'Veterans Working Together' project will span an initial period of three years and is intended to provide veterans, ex-service persons, war widows/ers, carers/partners, family and friends the opportunity to obtain or update skills such as wood and metalwork, cooking, weaving, crafts; participate in outdoor activities; receive up-to-date information on health and lifestyle issues and provide a place where members can just call in for a coffee and a chat.

Our centre is not a 'Men's Shed' as are some others that operate within South Australia. It is a place where all members of the veteran community can come and participate and help each other, be they male or female and we welcome anyone who is visiting Peterborough or just passing through, to drop in and join in any activity.

The centre is based at the 'Old Scout Hall', 82-84 Main St. Peterborough and will operate initially two days per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 4pm as of January 6th, 2003.

We look forward to seeing you if you are ever in the neighbourhood. Further information regarding the centre, the project or the association can be obtained by telephoning
