MHHG was formed in 1994 and were registered with an ABN in November 1999. Initially the association was a sub group of the Monarto Residents Association Inc. and the Residents' Group was formed by Christine and Jeff Jones after a public meeting, and who were the association's inaugural secretary and president. Under their community leadership several sub groups were established including the MHHG. The group is now known as The Monarto Historical Heritage Group.
The area of Monarto and Murraylands has undergone great transformation from the time of its early Lutheran beginnings to the very political Monarto satellite city project, which saw land vested in the Monarto Development Commission and then buried in political redtape. Monarto consists of several townships that are Monarto North, Monarto South, Monarto Town Centre area and other railway sidings. The railway is part of the main Adelaide to Melbourne line, and was one of the earlier railways of SA. Monarto South siding boasted the first electric signal station.
