 Sustainability and Arts Festival

Our annual festival will this year focus on the theme of "Sustainable Living".  Sunday October 26th is the date for this exciting event.

The aim is to create a very hands on and interactive approach for the participants on the day .  Zero Waste SA have donated re-usable shopping bags that will be provided free to families upon their entrance.  These can then be used to collect product samples and information as people move around the displays.  The aim is for participants to walk away after the event ready to implement at least one new initiative or behaviour change in their lives.

The festival will also feature entertainment, workshops, speakers, children's activities, artist's gallery and stalls.  The event will endeavour to showcase local artists using recycled products to create art and craft pieces.  If you would like to submit an item please contact the Centre on 8370 6880.

Students from surrounding primary schools will be invited to submit pieces made from recycled materials into a Junk Art Competition.  Prizes will be given away for the best and/or most creative use  of materials.

Year 8 students from St John's Grammar School will be designing a logo to promote the event.  Watch this space to see the design selected to use for branding on all stationery and advertising relating to the Sustainability and Arts Festival.

This festival is an exciting community event that will focus on a very important and relevant subject affecting all families now and into the future - "Sustainability of our environment".  We look forward to seeing a large number of local businesses represented and high attendance numbers on that day.

School Holiday activities leading up to the Festival will follow the theme of the day.  Refer to page 4 of this newsletter for April school holiday workshops.

Any enquiries regarding the Festival can be directed to either Jodie or Lyn at the Centre on 8370 6880.

 Telling our Stories

The Telling our stories project is well under way .  Year 12 students from St John's Grammar School are meeting with the storytellers for up to 3 sessions, getting to know each other and recording the stories.  Our storytellers are sharing a wealth of experience that unfolds through rich and  interesting lives, while students are gaining an insight into times easily lost to a new generation.

The Telling our stories project will continue through to the middle of the year with students transforming the stories into digital format to share with the storytellers.  The stories will form part of the students' English Communication assessment, counting for 15% of their final results.

Volunteers Wanted

We like to have 2 volunteers working in our office each day of the week for support and back-up and at present there are several vacancies. If you feel that you could contribute to the Centre in this way please contact the Centre on 8370 6880. Even if you can only offer to be available for 2-3 hours per week we'd love to hear from you.  We're especially keen to have someone available for 2 hours on Friday mornings.  Training is available and the team of volunteers that we have is a cheerful supportive group. ( a sense of humour is essential)  Please phone us on 8370 6880.

We also need volunteers to work with the seniors program. These volunteers will be required to assist in one of the following areas; setting up, catering, planning sessions and arranging transport. You need only to be available for the sessions, or to assist with planning at other times. Training and support will be provided. Please contact the Centre if you would like to help in this area, 8370 6880.

Website, Email and Fax

The management of the Community Centre is looking at more effective and cost efficient methods of promoting what is happening at the Centre.

With this in mind we are aiming to develop a data base to enable people to receive regular updates of programs, courses and events via e-mail.

If you would like to receive information in this way please e-mail the Centre at corocom@bigpond.net.au and we will add your address to our data base.

Please note the change in our e-mail address and adjust your address book accordingly!

Note too our new Fax number at the Centre   -   8370 4914

Don't forget to check our web site which is updated weekly.  The site contains current information and often has photos of recent events.  Find us at :

www.communitywebs.org/CoromandelCommunityCentre

Add us to your list of favourite sites, now!

We will also be placing ads in the Messenger Press and the Blackwood Times but will  be reducing the number of newsletters we produce.  If you still wish to receive a newsletter, please contact the Centre and we will arrange to have one posted to you.

Art for sale

Members of the two Art classes currently held at the Centre are displaying some of their finished works in our foyer with a view to selling them.  Have a look at them and if you are interested (and if they are not marked "Not for sale") ask the office staff for help.  We'll be happy to take your cash or cheque and arrange for payment to be made to the artist.

Centre Extensions

Further extensions have taken place at the Coromandel Community Centre and are now ready for use  .  The existing pergola has been enlarged and a decking area added next to the new Activity Room.  They improve not only the appearance of the facility but also the ability of the Centre to deliver quality programs.  Thanks are due to the City of Onkaparinga for its foresight in funding this work.

Landcare Group

The newly formed Coromandel Valley Land Care Group has planted some 200 seedlings along Chambers Creek near the Centre.  The program is recognised by the Our Patch Program and made possible by the City of Onkaparinga which arranged for further clearing and planting work.  Despite the drought, the plantings are doing well and the public is encouraged to assist the growth of these trees by removing weed growth from around the plants.  5 minutes of your time when you're out walking the dog or exercising, can make a difference.  Similarly if you see tree guards that have shifted from their position feel free to replace them.

If you are interested in joining the group contact David Wyatt on 8270 4400 or email him at davidwyatt@aapt.net.au

In a separate but related matter the Centre has been successful in obtaining a Federal Govt Community Water Grant to:

  • develop an integrated rainwater system

  • upgrade irrigation controls

  • construct a wetland area

This initiative will save valuable community water and educate the local community about smart water use.

 Green Hub Project

Coromandel Community Centre is being supported by the City of Onkaparinga to become a Green Hub demonstration project.

The idea behind the Green Hub is to identify creative and practical ways to promote sustainable living in the local community. The project may result in improvements to the building and grounds that will have environmental benefits as well as demonstrate different technologies and systems that are easy to install at home. There is also an opportunity to develop educational courses or activities and provide useful information on a whole range of areas – from food and gardening to water and energy efficiency around the home.
