1. 'BUSH REHABILITATION' WORKSHOP, STIRLING CEMETERY BUSH
(10am this Sunday, March 7)
_________________________________________________________________
The Aldgate Valley Landcare Group will hold a bush rehabilitation workshop this Sunday morning in the Stirling Cemetery Bush. The aim of the morning's workshop will be to use minimum disturbance techniques to remove invasive environmental weeds interspersed in an area of otherwise good quality bushland. The area we will be looking at is a triangle-shaped patch of good quality bushland which fronts onto Cambridge Road near the Oxford Road intersection (where the walking track cuts through to the cemetery). This provides an excellent example of local native bush as it once would have been, and which is is only lightly invaded by weeds. Many of the larger woody weeds have already been removed.
If there is time, we may also extend into an area of weedier bush deeper into the Cemetery reserve, which is a known habitat of bandicoots and where we need to be especially careful that any bush rehabilitation work does not disturb bandicoot habitat by removing weeds which provide important protection from predators etc.
We will provide all the necessary tools etc (courtesy of the Adelaide Hills Council's 'Friends of Bush' trailer, which they provide fully equipped to volunteer groups like ours).
WHEN: Sunday, March 7, 10am-12noon
WHERE: Meet on Cambridge Road (back gate to Cemetery)
WHO: Anyone is welcome (locals and not-so-locals)
BRING: Old clothes & gloves

2. WANTED: LOCAL YOUNG PEOPLE FOR VOLUNTEER PROJECT ON V.O.B.
(Youth Conservation Corps seeks 15-24 year olds)
_________________________________________________________________
The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is seeking a team of young people, aged between 15 and 24 years, to gain work experience and training while doing a program of volunteer work with the Valley of the Bandicoots project over the next few months.
The YCC - a new State Government program - is particularly seeking local young people, who are prepared to commit about three days a week of their time for training and practical experience working on the Valley of the Bandicoots.
According to a YCC brochure, the scheme will provide the young volunteers with "career planning, specific project training and work experience", as well as an opportunity to win one of two part-scholarships which are awarded annually.
"Youth Conservation Corps projects offer you the opportunity to be involved in worth while experiences, while gaining valuable contacts in the business community," the brochure says. "Youth Conservation Corps recognises that finding a job is your goal, but being able to influence the world and your local surroundings is also rewarding."
It says that as part of the project, each participant will develop a personalised career plan and build a Personal Portfolio of Achievements.
"You will also undertake specialised training relevant to the project you are working on, and have an opportunity to undertake practical work experience which will provide you with valuable experience," the brochure says.
"Skills gained on conservation programs will be transferable to other careers. These opportunities will be explored, along with genuine employment referrals."

3. FIRST ANNIVERSARY MEETING: MORE THAN 40 PEOPLE TURNED UP
(& more than 30 'participating property' signs awarded)
_________________________________________________________________
More than 40 people came along to the Aldgate Valley Community Hall on Thursday, February 19, to receive their Valley of the Bandicoots (VOB) 'participating property' signs, and to comment on the project's first year.
The VOB management committee has awarded 37 signs: 25 to participating landholders on adjoining properties, seven to the Adelaide Hills Council for its reserves along the VOB corridor, one each to Aldgate and Mylor Primary Schools, National Trust SA (Nurrutti Reserve) and Warrawong Sanctuary, and one 'honoury' sign to Nature Foundation president Bob Sharrad.
Many thanks to Dr Rob Morrison for presenting the signs and attending the meeting - and to all the others who came along and made it such an enjoyable and sociable evening.
Please remember that - if your property adjoins the Valley of the Bandicoots - VOB Project Officer Mark Fagan is available to discuss how your property can participate in the project (contact: 0411-713-343, email: meshach@iweb.net.au).

4. VALLEY OF THE BANDICOOTS AT 'ANIMAL EXPO' THIS WEEKEND
(Morphetville Racecourse, March 6 & 7)
_________________________________________________________________

David Mussared (Saturday) and Alison Saunders (Sunday) will be staffing the display, which will be aimed at encouraging volunteers to join our bush rehabilitation workshops and other activities as part of the Valley of the Bandicoots.
Please drop in and see us if you are at the Animal Expo. If you are willing to come and help out on the booth, please contact David Mussared (8388-5608, mussared@emailmedia.com.au) or Alison Saunders (8388-5528, alison.saunders@ihug.com.au).

5. COMING UP: 'BUSH REGENERATION' WORKSHOP AT ALDGATE VALLEY RESERVE
(10am12noon, Saturday, March 21)
_________________________________________________________________
The Aldgate Valley Landcare Group will hold a bush rehabilitation workshop on Saturday, March 21 at the Aldgate Valley Reserve. The aim of the workshop will be to encourage the regrowth of regenerating and recently planted native species in an area - formerly a weedy mess - which has been extensively weeded and replanted by volunteers from the Aldgate Valley Landcare Group over the past three years.
We will be looking at some of the native species which are regrowing in the area, and at telling the difference between them and the regenerating weeds which are also growing back and which need to be eliminated. Some of the regrowth is quite visible and recognisable, some of it is still very tiny.
Unlike the patch of bush in the Stirling Cemetery, where we will be working on March 7, the Aldgate Valley Reserve Area has been extensively weed-invaded and massively disturbed over many years - but it is astounding what is still coming up from the soil when given a chance, and the seedlings we planted 18 months or so ago are also shooting up.
We will provide all the necessary tools etc (courtesy of the Adelaide Hills Council's 'Friends of Bush' trailer, which they provide fully equipped to volunteer groups like ours).
WHEN: Saturday, March 21, 10am-12noon
WHERE: Aldgate Valley Reserve (corner of Shanks Road & Aldgate Valley Road)
BRING: Old clothes & gloves
