  Who are we

The Australian Breastfeeding Association is a voluntary organisation established in 1964 (as the Nursing Mothers' Association of Australia) to encourage and support mothers who wish to breastfeed, whilst promoting in the community an awareness of the importance of Human Milk.

Since 1964, the Australian Breastfeeding Association has been working towards improving breastfeeding rates.  There is still some way to go!

In Australia, breastfeeding duration still falls short of the recommendation by the World Health Organisation to exclusively breastfeed for six months, and then continue for two years and beyond with the addition of appropriate solid foods.  Around 86 % of babies in Australia start breastfeeding, however by six months of age, just under half are receiving any breastmilk at all.

As Australia's leading authority on breastfeeding, we educate and support mothers using
up-to-date research findings and the practical experiences of many women.  We work to influence our society to acknowledge breastfeeding as the norm for infant nutrition.
